Inspiration
We Have A Number Of Sources Of Solutions Thant Should Prove Inspirational For You.
The glass veranda (canopy/awning or roof) is quite possibly one the very best outdoor weather protection systems you can use in the UK both for domestic and commercial applications.
In most cases a glass veranda will not require planning permission and is technically considered a temporary structure for most sizes and applications. There will be times when permission might be required for the obvious cases of listed properties or when the veranda is particularly prominent to the surroundings. Very large or high structures which can be seen by others also might need permission so check before proceeding with your local authority.
Most polycarbonate or glass verandas are installed to an existing building or wall to have a seamless link to the property and provide an easy to access outdoor covered space.
There is a wall plate attached to the wall and then roof bars and support posts to create the rest of the structure, all supported by the existing wall and posts to the ground.
You can have self supporting verandas when the wall isn’t high enough or suitable for fitting to.
We offer either traditional sloping glass or polycarbonate roof systems with 4 posts minimum and larger sizes with additional posts or we also offer a flat glass roof system with 4 posts, ideal for a stand alone structure as visually it won’t look out of place..
Any veranda or pergola requires a solid foundation to anchor the support posts/legs to the ground and prevent any movement during high winds. The majority of weight for a wall mounted leaning glass verandah will be supported on the front posts and these need to be totally solid in their fixing points with no movement at all.
For lighter weight polycarbonate verandas you can often install using pre cast concrete blocks or pads, which are positioned into the ground after digging a hole or placed under the appropriate slab on your patio to provide the anchor weight and fixing points for the post brackets.
For heavier and larger systems we would recommend larger concrete bases or foundations at the exact positions for the posts and these can be retro installed underneath patios or grass as required.
The simple answer is no, they do not, at least no hotter than if you sat without the glass roof. There is usually full and complete air flow all around a glass roof structure at either side and the front. Only on the very stillest and hottest day of the year (that single day?) you might argue some heat gets trapped underneath the glass maybe, but any heat felt is generally exactly the same as if the glass wasn’t there and is the sun just shining onto you anyway.
As bid farewell to winter, it is time to prepare for radiant springs days and the warm embrace of summer.

In the world of home improvement and outdoor living, one thing is clear: size does not matter when it comes to creating comfortable and inviting outdoor spaces.
While large patios and extending gardens have long been the focus of outdoor design, small outdoor areas, such as balconies and roof terraces, are gaining popularity. These petite spaces can be transformed into cosy retreats with the right design elements, and having an awning could be a remarkable addition in this transformation. In this article, Samson Outdoor Living experts will help you to choose the best solution for any garden space.
It is not just large patios that need good protection from the sun, but small outdoor spaces too. Outdoor living is an ongoing trend, which is why awnings that protect such spaces from the sun and wind are very much in demand. That’s also true of small balconies and roof terraces. With all this in mind, Markilux offers a selection of products which fulfil those criteria, while at the same time providing protection against prying eyes.
For example, you could choose practical solutions including vertical external roller blinds models like the 620 and 625 fitted with the Tracfix system, which keeps the cover perfectly taut, or the Marquisolette model 740. These can all be easily attached to a wall or under a balcony as sun protection and privacy screens.
External vertical blinds are one of the fastest growing products for controlling solar heat gain through glass or open areas and reducing costs in air conditioning.
Markilux 790 side awning is also suitable for this purpose, additionally providing protection against low sun. Attached to a wall, it can be quickly extended by means of an integrated handle. It is also available with an angled top edge for balconies with a sloping roof overhang. In this configuration, it can be combined with a compact pergola awning or a folding arm awning.
Slimline cover cassette products are suitable for shielding tiny outdoor dining spaces from the sun and heat. This helps them blend in with the building feature to which they have been attached. Below are our Markilux 990 awnings which were fitted for a small area.
If you fancy free standing systems, Syncra, meanwhile, are well suited for small outside areas as they combine the advantages of an awning with the flexibility of a parasol. This system hangs on a crossbeam supported by two lateral posts, giving the users plenty of space under the solar protection system. It can either be fixed permanently to the ground or held in place by ballast boxes that can double up as plant beds or seat.
When you require an awning in an extra large size (in particular over about 6 metres wide) then the options can be greatly reduced. However, there are several types that can reach widths of up to 14 metres!
For an area up to 6.5m wide and up to 4m in projection, the Weinor Opal awning or Weinor Semina Life awning will be ideal. The full cassette keeps the awning protected when it is not in use and the optional drop down valance provides extra shade and privacy.
For some gardens requiring the larger awning, our Weinor I/K/N 2000 awning or Markilux 1600 can offer up to 7 metres in width and 4 metres in projection. These awnings are not only stylish but they also withstand winds up to Force 5 on the Beaufort scale.

For the UK homeowners, where outdoor living is a way of life, they face a common challenge – an expansive outdoor space that remains largely unused during the hottest months of the year. The extensive glass façade of the house offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape but also contributed to a significant increase in indoor temperatures due to solar heat gain. This leads to a common need: What can you do to provide shade, reduce heat and transform the outdoor area.
According to the latest research, approximately 87%** of British homes have gardens – with seven out of eight households having access to either a private or shared area, equaling around 23 million outdoor spaces.

Whether as a free standing structure or as an extension of the property, a modern pergola with rotating or with a retracting roof provides a dedicated outdoor ‘’room’’ in any premises. |
At Samson Outdoor Living, we provide a vast range of Retractable Terrace covers, offering the ability to cover small patios to large areas but with the advantage of being able to retract the fabric roof in finer weather.
The pergola systems we offer are designed to deal with the very diverse UK weather and the various options either guide the rainwater off the front of sides or even into concealed guttering channels built into the framework of the structure.

One of many Markilux refinements: the lateral fabric guide without a gap between fabric cover and guide track. For a more beautiful overall look and better wind stability. | For better rainwater drainage, the front support post of the Markilux pergola can be lowered between 20 and 40 cm in no time, depending on the size. |
As we transition into the colder months, it is likely the more temporary covers such as parasols and umbrellas won’t stand up to the UK’s adverse weather conditions. The ideal solution to this is our highly durable pergola systems that offers an open-air alfresco feel when left fully open, and ensures a completely water, wind and even snow tight roof when closed. Moreover, the Markilux Pergola has a higher wind rating and better rain protection ability over a normal awning and is also available in far larger sizes. (Up to five Markilux Pergolas can be linked together).
Here is a recent installation of a Markilux Pergola system for our customer. Not only providing shade for the patio and terrace but it also offered protection to the glass facade behind it. This dual-purpose functionality addressed the issue of solar heat gain in the indoor spaces while preserving the stunning outdoor views. This pergola is made of a coupled awning unit with three posts supported.
Now is the time for you to add your own pergola onto your home. Contact us today to take advantage of our special offer: FREE Tahoma Switch when ordering a Markilux Pergola in October.
