Freestanding Awnings

More UK properties than ever are looking for reliable sun and rain protection for their outdoor spaces. For many homes and commercial premises, however, fixing an awning or pergola directly to the building simply is not possible. The property may be listed, sit within a conservation area, or most commonly of all, the wall may not be tall enough, or strong enough to mount an awning or pergola at a usable height.

In these situations a freestanding framework or structure is often the ideal solution. By supporting the products on their own framework, away from or independent of the building, they can be installed exactly where you want them, and in many cases this makes them acceptable to local authorities, landlords or building owners where a fixed installation would not be.

Our freestanding awnings range has grown year on year with multiple options, sizes and shapes to cover small, medium or very large outdoor areas.

When you have structural problems with your wall, single storey building height limitations, multiple obstructions or maybe you cannot fix to the building because it is listed or unsuitable, then a freestanding retractable awning is one great solution.

Using various forms of framework systems, in aluminium or steel, it is possible to install almost any size of folding arm awning into a freestanding space, either adjacent to your property, or installed away from it altogether.

Markilux Planet Freestanding Shade

Create Large Covered Areas Away From Your Property

With our bespoke framework systems you can create generous covered areas away from your property, whether that is a simple goalpost arrangement or a more complex multi post structure fitted with retractable awnings, pergola roofs and other shading products.

This flexibility means you are no longer limited by the position, height or condition of your building. Instead, the covered space can be placed exactly where it works best for you, in the middle of a garden, across a patio, or over a commercial terrace.

Permanent or Mobile Framework Options

Many freestanding framework solutions can be installed in one of two ways depending on your site and your plans:

Permanent fixing, where the frame is bolted to concrete pads or concreted directly into the ground for a fixed, long term position.

Mobile, floating support, where large weighted boxes hold the frame securely in place without any ground fixing. These heavy boxes can double up as planters or seating with various cover options, and can be repositioned later if your requirements change.

This makes freestanding systems particularly useful where you cannot dig into the ground, do not want a permanent fixing, or may need to move the structure in the future. They are also ideal as genuinely temporary structures, which can help where planning considerations apply.

Freestanding Awning Features We Love

There are some great benefits to freestanding awnings:

  • No disturbance to the building walls
  • Weak or low height walls can be left out of the installation, so you can create whatever size and height is required on site
  • Create an outdoor covered space away from the main building
  • Place the outdoor protection exactly where you want or need it, regardless of the building
  • Fully retractable fabric when not in use, to protect it and keep it out of sight

In many freestanding solutions we use existing retractable folding arm awning models and install them onto a framework designed for the weight and forces applied when in use. These can be concreted into the ground or bolted to concrete pads or other suitable fixing points.

We also offer specific freestanding solutions which are designed purely as such, for either domestic or commercial applications.

Markilux Syncra (Fix and Flex)

The Syncra frame system from Markilux provides an exceptional aluminium goalpost structure, allowing the installation of any of the high quality retractable awnings they manufacture, as well as their pergola awning ranges.

There are two versions. The Syncra Fix is a fixed system bolted to the ground on a suitable substrate. The Syncra Flex uses large steel weighted boxes to support the frame and awnings. These boxes are filled with aggregate and become very heavy, but they also double up as either seating or planters.

The biggest benefit is that the Flex system is perfect for spaces where you cannot dig into the ground, or simply prefer not to because the system may be moved at a later date. They work very well as genuinely temporary structures and can assist with planning applications where required.

The system is available as a Syncra Uno, for fitting an awning or pergola to one side, or the full Syncra, with products fitted to both sides to double the size of the covered area.

Markilux Markant

The Markilux Markant is an exceptional freestanding pergola style awning, ideal for creating a defined covered area with a fabric roof. Like the rest of the range it can be specified to suit domestic or commercial use and combined with side infill options for additional weather protection  It is more unique with the flat roof design and clever rainwater dispersal design.

Weinor Duofix

The Weinor Duofix support frame offers another high quality freestanding option, allowing Weinor awnings to be installed without relying on a suitable building wall. It is a robust and neat solution where a freestanding structure is preferred or required.

Lewens Universal Support Frame

Lewens manufacture an excellent universal freestanding frame system, available in 29 colours and made to measure for supporting single or double awning systems, as well as much larger pergola systems.

This framework is available with weighted boxes or ground plate fixings, depending on site conditions. The Lewens system can also combine different products on the same framework, for example a glass veranda on one side and a retractable fabric roof on the other.

KE Freestanding Pergola Systems

KE Outdoor Design, manufactured in Italy and part of the respected Gennius range, produce some of the finest pergola awning systems available, and importantly, almost all of them can be specified as freestanding as well as wall mounted. This makes them an ideal choice where a building wall is unsuitable, too low, listed or within a conservation area, allowing a high quality covered structure to be positioned exactly where you need it.

Most KE pergolas are self supporting aluminium structures, meaning they stand on their own posts and can be located adjacent to the property or completely away from it. They are equally suited to domestic gardens and commercial settings such as pubs, restaurants, hotels and cafes, and many models can be coupled together to cover very large areas.

The main KE freestanding pergola models we offer include:

KE Isola 3 (retractable fabric roof)
A sliding fabric roof pergola with a distinctive lowered arch profile that keeps overall height to a minimum, useful where height is restricted. Available freestanding or wall mounted, with coverage up to around 7m x 5.5m and optional side screens or sliding glass to enclose the space.

KE Plan / Keplan (flat fabric roof)
A contemporary flat roofed pergola with gracious retractable folding fabric. Its height adjustable columns make it particularly useful on sloping or uneven ground, and it is available in both self supporting and wall mounted versions.

KE Kedry Prime and Kedry Skylife (bioclimatic louvre roof)
Self supporting aluminium louvre roof pergolas with adjustable aluminium blades that rotate to control sun, shade and ventilation, with integrated hidden rainwater drainage. The Skylife adds a retractable louvre roof for full open air exposure. Both offer excellent wind resistance, can be closed in with vertical fabrics or sliding glass, and accept integrated LED lighting.

Why KE suits a freestanding solution

  • Self supporting designs that do not rely on a suitable building wall
  • Place a covered area anywhere in a garden, terrace or commercial space
  • Coupled modules for very large areas
  • Side infill options (fabric screens or sliding glass) to create a sheltered, room like space
  • A choice of fabric, louvre or glass roofs depending on the level of protection required

Combined with the right base, whether ground fixed or supported on weighted boxes, a KE pergola provides a robust, all season covered area that works independently of your building.

Bespoke Steel and Aluminium Frames

Where a standard framework will not suit the shape, size or setting, Samson can fabricate made to order steel or aluminium frames designed specifically for your project. This allows us to support retractable awnings and other products across complex shapes, awkward layouts and very large areas, tailored precisely to your site.

Freestanding Pergola Awnings

Select from many freestanding pergola awning systems, which are essentially four post systems, sometimes six or more for larger sizes, and most can be coupled together to create multiple unit installations for very large areas.

Great examples include the Markilux Markant, the KE Isola and Plan ranges and the Lewens Positano. All have small variations in how rainwater is dealt with on the canopy when in use.

Always using fabric for the roof canopy, these systems offer natural light underneath, depending on your fabric choice, and fully retract for open air exposure when required.

Side infill options are available for one or all sides to further protect from the weather. We know that wind is the biggest enemy of outdoor living, and it is what causes most people to leave outdoor areas when it gets too cold or windy to relax outside.

Butterfly Awnings

See Our Commercial Freestanding Solutions

Many of the freestanding awnings we offer are used in commercial settings. Older pubs, restaurants and other commercial buildings often have equally challenging wall height and structural issues, with varied roof shapes and heights that make a wall mounted system impossible.
