Samson Awnings have specialised in supplying high quality retractable fabric awnings since 2006 and are able to offer a retractable awning for pretty much any application, domestic or commercial, in standard or made to measure sizes. How much is an average retractable awning? A commonly asked question.
With the explosion in developing and expanding outdoor spaces in domestic and commercial premises, the retractable awning has become a ‘must have’ product now for so many homes and businesses in the UK. We are still way behind the majority of European countries in taking sun shading and outdoor living generally seriously, regardless of climate. Protection from the sun is the original and primary function for a self supported awning, whilst also defining a space outdoors too, but protection from frequent rainfall here in the UK is also desirable and possible with many models we offer.
Defining an outdoor space and using extras such as LED lighting, heating and drop down front valances for privacy and extra shade, is now a common request and all possible with the many modern and high performance awnings we offer.
When we say ‘basic’ we simply mean the awning has no extras and is primarily for the purpose of sun shading an outdoor area or room. Our basic awnings are of the highest quality, generally manufactured in Germany or Holland as leading worldwide brands, developed in the same climate as our own and using the highest quality components and materials.
If we say that most retractable fabric awnings purchased for the purpose of sun shading a normal size patio or garden area are in-between around 2.5m wide and 5m wide and the projection varying between 2m and 3m for a basic awning – All our awnings are made to measure on the width.
So, for a basic awning at around 3m-5m wide and between 2m and 3m projection you would expect to pay between £1,800 and £3,000 plus VAT

We are using the word ‘luxury’ in a world far too used to seeing ‘cheap’ as returned results in Google searches, regardless of the search. We use luxury to describe larger sized full cassette awnings with high specifications and electric operation as standard and also with far more options available.
Most of the higher end awnings we offer can be manufactured up to around 14 metres wide with a maximum projection of 4 metres possible. Stronger and larger drop forges aluminium arms are used, and they can be used in higher wind speeds with protection from light rain also possible.
A popular width has become around 7 metres more recently and this is the maximum width for an awning in one complete piece before they are ‘coupled’ which is effectively 2 awnings joined together. A lot of larger awnings are sold between 5m and 7m wide with a projection between 3m and 4m. The brackets for fixing awnings this size become very important and there are more of them so the wall they are fixing to is also more important for the right position and anchorage.
For a luxury awning between 5m and 7m wide and 3m and 4m projection you would expect to pay between £3,800 and £8,500

AWNINGS WITH LED LIGHTING
With developments in LED technology and advances in awning designs, the demand for LED lighting is now extraordinarily strong in outdoor awnings. The LED lights themselves emit excellent levels of light and make the awning usable into the evening, either as an awning or simply a super stylish light bar.
The lights are usually dimmable from the hand transmitter, and we offer several models now with either lights in the underside of the awning cassette, underneath the awning arms or in the front profile. It is also possible to buy ‘light bars’ and ‘light boxes’ as an additional item to an existing awning or pergola system.
A good example of a most up to date awning with LED lights would be the Weinor Semina Life LED and a popular size would be around 4m wide and a 3m projection.
PRICES FROM £4,000
(Based on 4m x 3m)
Made to measure width sizes in millimetres | High quality LED lights built into the underside of the main cassette and usable regardless of awning position | High quality aluminium construction, often with options on cassette finishing | Electric operation with remote control handset | Choice of over 200 fabrics for the main awning cover | Wall mounting brackets | 5 year guarantee
We now have many other LED lighting options from all the major manufacturers carrying in price, style, and output. As more people take to outdoor living the need for lighting has become far more important and usually associated with one or more infra-red heaters too for added comfort into the evening.
AWNINGS WITH DROP DOWN VALANCE
A very popular awning accessory for anyone with a Southwest or West facing garden is an electric operated drop down fabric valance. Not only does this provide adjustable sun shading for low lying sun, it also offers privacy and some protection from cooler breezes into the evenings.
The drop down valance is available in 3 lengths – 1m, 1.5m and 2.1m going right to the floor.
Incorporated into the front profile this neat system also works with the wind sensor system to ensure it retracts fully if the wind gets too strong.
PRICES FROM £4,200
(Based on 4m x 3m)
Made to measure width sizes in millimetres | Drop down electric front valance with remote control operation | High quality aluminium construction often with options on cassette finishing | Electric operation with remote control | Built in wind sensor to retract valance and awning when necessary | Choice of oval and square cassette models for better architectural integration | Choice of over 200 fabrics for the main awning cover | Wall mounting brackets | 5 year guarantee
We also offer high quality pull out fabric side screens, which are often ordered with the drop down valance awning to further protect one or both sides of the awning, again with privacy, low lying sun shading or wind protection as the main driver.
AWNINGS IN EXTRA LARGE SIZES
Samson can offer awnings up to 14m wide to cover very large terraces, patios or green areas.
Obviously, we can do wider by simply fitting side by side too.
Once over 7 metres wide, retractable awnings will be ‘coupled’ effectively meaning they are 2 awnings combined as one unit with a connection between but sharing one motor drive.
The maximum projection for unsupported fabric awnings is still 4 metres at any width.
PRICES FROM £9,500
(Based on 9m x 4m)
Made to measure width sizes in millimetres | High quality aluminium construction often with options on cassette finishing | Electric operation with remote control handset | Built in wind sensor | Choice of round, oval and square cassette models for better architectural integration | Choice of over 200 fabrics for the main awning cover | Wall mounting brackets | 5 year guarantee
We still find the use of awnings for covering large areas a popular and sensible choice simply because the entire fabric can be put away at the push of a button when required to leave a totally clear space.
COMMERCIAL AWNINGS WITH BRANDING
We have supplied hundreds of shops, offices, catering trailers and other buildings where the awning is used for sun shading but also for a large advertising medium. Brand reinforcement by using the awning right in front of your building and seen by everyone.
We can print letter and logos onto most awnings we offer in various forms of printing methods depending on the number of colours and complexity of the requirement.
There is no real typical size but a popular size seems to be around 6m wide with a 2-3m projection, probably covering a typical shop window size in a high street with some overlap either side.
PRICES FROM £3,800
(Based on 6m x 2m)
Made to measure width sizes in millimetres | Cover with lettering printed for the company name. Approximately 20 letters in this example. | High quality aluminium construction, often with options on cassette finishing and colour | Electric operation with remote control handset and wind sensor for safety | Choice of over 200 fabrics for the main awning cover | Wall mounting brackets | 5 year guarantee
The logos can be a complex pricing depending on the colours used and printing process used.
Different fabrics used require different processes and the colours also affect the overall process.
We see more and more companies having the awnings branded as branding is now so much more important in the business world…
Sometimes an awning will require a projection out from the wall which is greater than the width for effective shading or when fitting in a tight space. We offer retractable awnings that achieve this by the supporting arms crossing over each other when closed. Several options are available in manual or electric operation. This is a limited range of only a couple of awning models, but they are being used more frequently and the installation against the structure requires a larger space than most other awnings.
PRICES FROM £2,800
(Based on 3m width x 4m projection)
Made to measure width sizes in millimetres for perfect sizing | High quality aluminium construction with options on cassette finishing and colour | Manual operation with servo assisted operation for easier handling | Choice of over 200 fabrics for the main awning cover | Wall mounting brackets | 5 year guarantee
If the projection is a lot more than the width available, then you can also look at the retractable pergola systems we offer using side channels and no arms involved at all. The fabric rolls out of a cassette alongside channels and therefore are not subject to the same physical restrictions as an awning. They also offer a higher level of wind and rain resistance capability.
AWNINGS FOR RAIN PROTECTION
This is a contentious subject as most manufacturers will try to default state the awnings are not to be used in rainfall, but this is normally referring to heavy rain, which of course is difficult to define in a real world and common sense should be key to managing any awning.
The simple fact is that rainfall on an extended fabric awning needs to flow freely off the cover as quickly as possible and therefore the angle of the cover is key, as well as how taught the fabric is on the extended awning. Some awning models are far stronger and can achieve a better cover rigidity when fully extended. What is to be avoided is any pooling of water at all on the cover as once this occurs it is highly likely the collection of water will continue until it is too heavy and rips the fabric or worse…
Over about 25 degrees of pitch this is usually perfectly fine, and the main enemy of a self supported awning is the wind. If you wish to use a self-supporting retractable awning for protection from rain, then we would be looking at steep angle settings and a model which offers the greatest arm strength. There are a few ideal models.
A wind sensor would be standard on an electric operated model, and we wouldn’t recommend anyone to have a manual awning for anything but sun shading.
Electric operation provides convenience but also the safety of automatic retraction in windier conditions. You can have rain sensors on awnings, but we have found these to be troublesome in our British climate.
Prices for awnings used for rain are no different to other awnings and requesting a waterproof fabric is also not necessary as you do not want the water sitting on the fabric at any point anyway.
If there is any doubt about the suitability whatsoever, we would recommend the retractable pergola systems with side channels and front support posts which provide far higher wind ratings and deal better with rainwater as they have 4 sided fabric tension…
