What is a butterfly awning?

A butterfly awning is a free standing steel or aluminium goalpost frame system with two retractable folding arm awnings mounted back to back at the top, creating a “butterfly wing” canopy when extended. This design provides a large, open covered area without needing to fix anything to a building, making it ideal for terraces, gardens, hospitality spaces and event areas. Thanks to advances in awning technology and aluminium profile design, modern butterfly awnings can now cover very substantial areas, often up to around 13 metres long and 8 metres wide, and offer far more than basic sun shade. The robust framework and high‑performance awning hardware are engineered to handle everyday UK weather, with options such as full cassette covers, integrated LED lighting, infra red heating and different fabric specifications. Systems like the Markilux Syncra or Lewens Universal support frame use oversized aluminium profiles for extra strength and durability, providing a reliable structure that can also take additional lighting and infrared heating if required. These frames are typically anchored to large concrete pads for permanent installations, but can also be secured using heavy weighted free standing floor bases, which can be cladded in timber or other materials to double as built in seating or planters.
