What is a Bioclimatic Pergola?
A ‘bioclimatic pergola’ is a term used to describe an electric operated, aluminium profile pergola system using tilting aluminium roof slats or blades, also referred to as ‘louvre blades’.
This type of pergola roof creates and assists with air flow using the direction and variable angle of the roof blades, helping control the overall climate underneath the pergola structure.
The general use of this term online refers to an electric ‘luxury’ system as opposed to a basic manual operated system, which is a completely different level of specification, protection and stability.
The Bioclimatic Pergola is now a fast growing system, used in the UK for commercial and domestic applications, providing sun shade and rain protection for outdoor terrace and patio areas. Properly designed and specified the pergola can be fitted with retractable or fixed sides to make an ‘outdoor room’ area for most of the year weather protection, although it isn’t an insulated area so has limitations of use in very cold weather, all depending on the sun positioning and other factors. It is designed to offer superb levels of weather protection most of the year round and make any outdoor space far more usable.
In commercial applications, such as a restaurant, hotel or pub the benefits are obvious in providing quality space for customers to use more often, especially in less than perfect weather, but also protect from the harsh midday sun in the hot summer months. The roof blades are tilted by remote control and the best models enable the stacking of blades to then retract to one side to provide around 80% exposure.
LED Lighting, heating and other options can enhance the area and generally the maximum size for one unit is around 6m x 4m, but the systems can be joined together infinitely.
The traditional use and meaning for the word ‘Pergola’ is now somewhat defunct when it comes to Google and Outdoor Living products and it is used in so many products for their description, but the basis for this description still covers products which have 2 or more supporting posts and create a fixed structure to perform as an outdoor protected living area..
