Does my house wall need special preparation for a retractable awning?
In many cases, no special preparation is needed, but it depends on the building and awning size. For example:
Standard two storey brick housesIf you are fixing a patio awning to a typical two storey brick house, there is usually no extra preparation required and we can fix directly to the wall.
Single storey buildings and some substratesSingle storey properties (such as bungalows or flat roof extensions), timber structures, and some wall materials often need additional brackets or “spreader plates” to distribute the load safely. We supply and specify these as part of our service.
Modern lightweight block constructionUltra modern homes built with very lightweight blocks can require a separate steel or aluminium framework to spread the load and provide secure fixing points.
Why this matters:
A fully extended folding arm awning behaves like a sail in the wind, putting significant stress on the fixing points.
If an awning is not correctly fixed, it can be dangerous and may even damage brickwork or the structure over time.
How Samson typically installs:
We normally use high strength chemical fixings for awning brackets to achieve greater load bearing capacity than standard fixings.
On single storey or timber buildings, we often use spreader plates or brackets (steel or aluminium sections) to:
Spread the load across more bricks or timbers
Raise the awning above gutter height where needed
Achieve the correct pitch without over‑stressing the top course of brickwork
If the wall is completely unsuitable, we can provide a freestanding steel “goalpost” frame to support the awning without fixing it to the house. This also allows awnings to be positioned away from the main building if required.Samson Awnings will always survey, specify and fabricate any special brackets or frameworks needed to ensure your awning is safely installed and in the best position for effective use.
