Are patio awning fabrics waterproof?

Most higher quality awning fabrics from leading manufacturers such as Markilux, Weinor, Lewens, and KE are not fully waterproof in standard form but are highly water resistant with high levels of resistance to rot and fading too.

They are designed to repel rain effectively during normal use and not hold it on the fabric.

For standard wall mounted retractable awnings, a fully waterproof fabric is not usually necessary. The key factor is the pitch of the awning. A minimum angle of around 14 degrees is recommended so rainwater can run off quickly. Without sufficient pitch, water can pool on the fabric, and the weight, rather than water penetration is what can cause stretching or damage.

Some premium folding arm awnings, when installed correctly with the right pitch, can comfortably handle light to moderate rainfall using these water resistant fabrics.

Fully waterproof or PVC coated fabrics are typically used on more robust, supported systems such as pergola style or retractable roof installations. These systems use side tracks and tensioning (often with zip guidance or internal supports) to keep the fabric tight and stable, allowing them to manage heavier rain more effectively.

There are also specialist fabric options available, including waterproof and fire-retardant materials, but these are generally used for specific applications and come with a more limited choice of colours and finishes.
