Transforming the Rooftop at Uncommon Holborn, London
Uncommon Holborn is a flagship coworking space that promotes community, creativity and flexibility. Located in the city of London, this place acts a vibrant gathering spot for more than 2000 members. The building includes 8 floors and one rooftop terrace. The goal was to turn their rooftop into a multipurpose outdoor space and show their ongoing commitment to member wellbeing and space innovation.
In early 2023, the architects in charge of renovating the area contacted Samson Outdoor Living to offer a customised solution, which aimed to finish in autumn.
OVERVIEW
After several discussions with our expert team and Markilux consultants, the brief came was agreed. Samson Outdoor Living offered a design that blends in seamlessly with the building’s architectural language and will be usable all year round. It had to accommodate a variety of functions, including networking events, social gatherings around the rooftop bar, outdoor events and informal meetings.
SOLUTION
To meet these requirements, Samson installed a combination of Markilux Markant, Markilux 970 awnings, and Markilux 776 vertical blinds, all colour-matched framework in Grey Brown RAL8019 to ensure consistency across the rooftop environment.
Markilux Markant Structures (x4)
The Markilux Markant system formed the core of the rooftop design. Engineered for large patio coverage, each structure includes a retractable fabric roof, allowing users to switch between open-sky views and full cover depending on weather conditions.
We decided to have three structures covering one side, and one single structure covered the other side.

Features: Integrated LED lighting in the inner frame and central rain gutter system for ambience and functionality
Markilux 776 Vertical Blinds (x2)
To enhance privacy and wind resistance without obstructing the view, Markilux 776 vertical blinds were added. When not in use, they retract into subtle cassettes.

It is extremely important for this structure to be used all in weather, so we completed with:
Somfy Tahoma Switch for smart control of all retractable elements and lighting, enabling easy adjustment via mobile or voice assistant
10x Markilux Infrared Heaters for comfortable warmth
LED lighting integrated within all Markant structures for atmosphere and safety
Outcome
After six months of planning and ordering, the outcome is an aesthetically beautiful and incredibly useful rooftop that further makes Uncommon Holborn’s position stand out as a pioneer in environmentally friendly, cutting-edge workspaces.
The project succeeds in creating a place that encourages socialising, leisure and cooperation by matching architectural elegance with strong outdoor performance. No matter rain or shine now, this raised terrace provides year round usability and demonstrate Uncommon’s dedication to fostering places that inspire its member.
