Generally a self supporting retractable awning wil stand up to wind speeds of around 20mph. Most higher specification awnings will have a tested and certified wind rating based on km/h or the Beaufort scale, but of course no one is ever really monitoring the wind speed in their back garden or patio to make a judgement on this…
With a retractable self supporting awning there are some general rules to stick to with daily usage.
Retractable awnings should always be closed when not in use and certainly if you are leaving your home. However if they are left out in a storm, there is always a solution if the awning is electrically operated…

You use pipe brackets. These brackets are made to order and space the awning brackets off the wall the depth required to miss the downpipes.. There are however 2 options generally..

We find most people worry unnecessarily about these extra brackets as when they are required then there really is no alternative and the trouble is most people look at them in complete isolation and not the whole installation with the awning. They will not be seen after a short time as they blend in.
