Can I use a Patio Awning in the rain?

Yes, but only under the right conditions.

As a general rule, a retractable folding arm patio awning should be installed with a minimum pitch of 14 degrees.

This allows rainwater to run off quickly and helps prevent water pooling. If the pitch is less than this, the awning should not be used in the rain, as water can collect on the fabric, causing it to sag and potentially leading to damage or injury.

For standard folding arm awnings, use in light rain is acceptable if the pitch is correct. However, in stronger winds or heavier rainfall, the awning should always be retracted. It’s also good practice to always retract the awning overnight or when unattended.

If the awning is closed while wet, it should be reopened as soon as possible to allow the fabric to dry. Never operate the awning in snow or if the fabric is frozen, any snow should be removed first, and frozen fabric must be allowed to thaw before use.

Modern supported and zip guided retractable roof systems are designed to perform better in rain and can be used at lower pitches, but standard wall mounted awnings require more care and attention.

Automatic weather sensors can help manage the awning, but they are not a complete fail safe. Regular user awareness and manual control are still important, especially during bad weather or extended periods away.
